What you would own.
Cognitiva Systems is looking for a hands-on mid-level engineer in Sarajevo to help prepare CognitivaOS for launch and support the platform after go-live. This is a broad engineering role combining application development, Claude-assisted coding, AWS cloud operations, API/provider integrations, end-to-end testing, troubleshooting, and Level 3 support. The role is ideal for someone who enjoys working across the stack, learning a complex platform quickly, and solving practical problems rather than staying within a narrow specialization.
A mid-level role: around 3–5 years of relevant hands-on experience; strong candidates with slightly less or more experience are considered.
You will
- Use Claude/Claude Code effectively to understand the existing codebase, implement changes, refactor safely, write tests, and accelerate debugging while following engineering review standards.
- Work with the existing CognitivaOS codebase and contribute to backend, API, integration, and selected frontend changes as needed.
- Support AWS environments including deployments, IAM/permissions, networking basics, secrets, logging, monitoring, databases, storage, and environment troubleshooting.
- Integrate and support third-party providers through REST APIs, SDKs, webhooks, callbacks, and asynchronous events.
- Help validate integrations with payment, KYC/identity, messaging/email, cloud, and other platform providers.
- Own end-to-end testing of critical workflows across Brand, Agency, Management Agency, Creator, and Core experiences.
- Test happy paths and failure paths including timeouts, retries, duplicate webhooks/events, invalid states, permission failures, payment exceptions, and provider outages.
- Support staging and production release readiness, regression testing, smoke testing, deployment checks, and launch-day technical support.
- Investigate Level 3 production issues using logs, traces, database queries, provider dashboards, and reproduction steps; identify root cause and implement or coordinate fixes.
- Create operational runbooks, troubleshooting guides, environment notes, and support documentation.
- Train Level 1/Level 2 support staff on system flows, common issues, escalation criteria, and how to collect useful diagnostic information.
- Assist with monitoring and alerting improvements so failures are detected before they become customer-reported incidents.
- Support data-quality and reconciliation checks where application state must match external provider state, especially around payment and verification workflows.
- Work closely with the CTO, learning the architecture, deployment, integration, and operational procedures.
- Participate in code reviews, pull requests, CI/CD checks, test automation, and release processes.
- Follow Cognitiva security, privacy, access-control, and data-residency requirements when working with environments and customer data.
You bring
- Approximately 3–5 years of software engineering experience.
- Strong working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web/backend development; experience with Node.js and React/Next.js is highly relevant.
- Comfortable reading an unfamiliar codebase, debugging issues, and making production-quality changes.
- Practical experience with AWS services and cloud-hosted applications.
- Experience integrating REST APIs, webhooks, SDKs, and third-party services.
- Good SQL and relational database skills, preferably PostgreSQL.
- Experience with Git, pull requests, CI/CD, and modern development workflows.
- Ability to test complete user journeys and think beyond a single component or feature.
- Strong troubleshooting mindset: able to work from symptoms, logs, events, and provider responses to root cause.
- Clear written and verbal English for documentation, provider communication, and support-team training.
- Comfort working in a startup environment where priorities may shift and ownership is broad.
Nice to have
- Experience using Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or other AI-assisted development tools in a real engineering workflow.
- Experience with event-driven systems, queues, retry/dead-letter patterns, idempotency, or webhook-heavy architectures.
- Exposure to payment platforms, wallets, payouts, KYC/KYB, fintech, marketplaces, or reconciliation workflows.
- Experience with Docker, containerized deployments, infrastructure-as-code, or AWS ECS/Lambda-style workloads.
- Familiarity with observability tools, structured logging, application monitoring, and incident troubleshooting.
- Experience writing automated API, integration, regression, or end-to-end tests.
- Experience supporting customer-facing SaaS platforms after production launch.
- Basic understanding of secure development, secrets management, least privilege, privacy, and regional data-residency concepts.
What this role is not
This role is not intended to replace the CTO's responsibility for system architecture, technical strategy, or design decisions. The engineer will work within the architecture and direction established by the CTO, providing hands-on implementation, testing, troubleshooting, operational support, and technical backup.
How we interview
The Meet step is practical: problem-solving and breadth over deep architectural theory. We want to see how you take a small unfamiliar service, understand it quickly, integrate an API, deploy or troubleshoot it in AWS, and explain how you would test and support it in production.
- A short code and debugging exercise in TypeScript/Node.js; AI tools are allowed if you explain and verify the result.
- An API/webhook integration scenario covering retries, idempotency, authentication, and error handling.
- An AWS troubleshooting scenario using logs, permissions, networking, configuration, and service health.
- An end-to-end testing scenario for a multi-step workflow involving an external provider.
- A production incident scenario on communication, triage, root-cause thinking, and escalation, and a conversation about documentation and training support teams.
Location and start
Based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. You start in time to be productive before the January 2027 launch.
